Nov. 4, 2022: Northeast Nebraska Firefighters Association Quarterly Meeting, 8 p.m., Blair Fire Department South Station, 218 S. 16th St.

I am certain by the time this article is published, Iowa will have experienced several grass fires. I hope no one has been injured. The past few years have certainly seen a definite increase in this type of call nationally. Many point to climate change. Others will point out how we have moved homes into the areas these fires tend to occur.

Le Mars Fire and Rescue was called to an apartment complex on the east side of town at 11:56 p.m. Sunday, Oct 9. Upon arrival they encountered heavy fire on the south exterior side of the building. The fire was on the second and third floor exterior decks and in the attic and roof of the building.

Denison Fire Department, home of Crawford County Search and Rescue, responded to mutual aid to Deloit Fire Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department to a pond north of Deloit on Sept. 28. A vehicle had gone into the pond and one of the two occupants escaped. Water rescue volunteers from Carroll County also responded.

With nearly all of Nebraska experiencing drought, the risk of wildfires has skyrocketed statewide and, in turn, the need for wildland-trained fire personnel is ever-growing. Almost 90% of Nebraska’s firefighters are volunteers.

The Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the 13000 block of Meadowbrook CT, Johnson Siding, unincorporated, Pennington County, SD.

The occupants were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and where able to exit the structure immediately and call 911.
