Wildfire

Johnson Siding Fire Department was called out April 16 for two separate but simultaneous incidents off Highway 44 West. The first page involved a dump truck vs. powerline near Shields Road and Highway 44. The dump truck operator was trapped in the cab of the vehicle for a short time until proper authorities could ensure the powerline was no longer energized. Thankfully that person had no injuries. The second scene involved a fire off of Log Porch Road that had the potential to threaten structures. Firefighters quickly stopped forward progress and spent considerable time mopping up. There were numerous hotspots where heat was trapped in the dry, peat-like duff inside the fire’s perimeter which required hand work to expose and water to cool. South Dakota state investigators have taken over determining cause. We appreciate our mutual aid partners for assisting us in keeping this incident very small, and our fabulous Pennington County 911 Dispatchers for coordinating the information and agencies during these two incidents.
