   Ground ladders play a critical role on the fireground; from rapid access for rescue operations to ventilation and at times, even fire suppression.

   The annual States Networking meeting was held in Des Moines on Nov. 10-11. Attendees from Iowa included Roger Carr, Aaron Clemons, Kent Brix, Mike Kime, Rick Schmidt, Lonnie Newhall, Chuck Raska and Taylor Moore. Attending from Nebraska were John and Marlene Bomar.

Protivin Fire Department was paged out for a truck on fire next to a corn field on 170th Street and Willow Avenue just four miles north of Protivin on October 20 at 3:50 p.m. The truck was attached to a fuel buggy that the owner did get unhooked before the fire took the whole truck. The truck was a total loss.

Yankton firefighters responded to a 1996 Gleaner combine fire northwest of Yankton on Sunday, Oct. 22. The operator reported a fire near the location of a hydraulic bank under the cab. The fire was nearly contained when the diesel fuel tank let go and ignited under the unit. Nearly 100 gallons of fuel burned.

At 9:08 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19, Waterloo Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residential fire at 529 Hope Ave. Upon arrival firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the roof of the house. Firefighters found a fire that started in the basement and went up the chimney chase to the attic. Fire was found on multiple floors. An unresponsive resident was rescued from the house and taken to a local hospital where he later died. Photo by Larry Klodt.

Easy Access

   When putting equipment on fire apparatus, think about the items you may need in a hurry. Place them in a position that they are easily accessed.

It is Coming

   South Dakota in the spring time. Single digit temperatures with blizzards one week. The next week, record high temperatures with flooding and spring wildfires. Good grief.
