     With the responsibility of responding to so many grain elevators in my district it is important to train for the worst-case scenarios. As a child growing up in the 1970’s in Jefferson, IA I recall the local cooperative elevator exploding taking the lives of a few men. One of these men was a neighbor.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue along with Nebraska State Patrol, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Pierce Fire and Rescue, Hadar Fire and Rescue and Hoskins/Woodland Park Rescue work a two-vehicle accident the morning of July 18 north of Norfolk on Hwy 81. The accident involved a fully load semi transporting diesel and a sandwich truck.

On July 12-14, six fire departments came together to take a water rescue class. Class participants came from Schuyler, David City, Morse Bluff, Oxford and Monroe. 

On Aug. 2, at 3 a.m. an eastbound train with three locomotives and 60 cars loaded with clay, cement and scrap metal derailed near New Underwood due to a washout caused by flash flooding.	 The two-person crew in the first locomotive were rescued after the train was partially submerged.

     At approximately 3 a.m. local time, Aug. 2, 2019, an eastbound Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad train consisting of three locomotives and 60 loaded cars of clay, cement and scrap metal encountered a significant washout due to flash flooding at New Underwood, SD.

     The Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in the 2400 block of Sprucewood St, Rapid Valley, Unincorporated, Pennington County, SD.

On Aug. 2, at 3 a.m. an eastbound train with three locomotives and 60 cars loaded with clay, cement and scrap metal derailed near New Underwood due to a washout caused by flash flooding.	 The two-person crew in the first locomotive were rescued after the train was partially submerged.

Chimney fire

This photo was taken Jan. 18 in Thorhult by Bob Thompson, Gygla Fire Chief. The fire is believed to have started from the chimney in the attic.

Anamosa fire

     Anamosa firefighters received a report of a house fire Monday afternoon, Jan. 14, and upon arrival the front portion of the house was ablaze.
